18ct mark on old French gold jewelry

I am interested in buying a very costly signet ring that the owner claims is mid-19C.
It has an 18ct mark on the inside of the shank. That looks suspicious to me. Just doesn't look right to me.
Do 19thC French gold jewelry have these 18ct marks?
I would appreciate any help on this.
