Yes, it's Italian - the AR is the province mark. I have Italian gold jewelry given to me by my bother when he was over in Italy with the same marks but have no idea where he bought it from, and it's not the type of question I could ask him ;-) Italian goldsmiths I believe were assigned a number. The jewelry would have been made after 1948 as that's when the star was added. It might help narrow down the search if you describe the jewelry and also included a photo. Someone might recognize the workmanship.
