22 carat gold in Britain
by: Anonymous

From 1576 - 1798 only the highest gold, 22 ct was used in wedding rings. It was only afterward that 18 carat became the norm except from 1942 during world war II when in Britain 9 carat became standard.

Atkin Brothers - Henry Atkins Maker's Mark
by: Anonymous

Hi Karen thanks for your question. These are British hallmarks.

Crown 22 is the purity mark on UK 22ct GOLD - ca 1844 - 1974

Read more about gold facts here.

Capital letters H A with decimal point equidistant and between these two letters in a rectangle is the trademark for:

ATKIN BROTHERS - HENRY ATKIN - ca 1841 - 1920s

most probably the maker of your great grandfather's antique gold wedding ring and the date of purchase (1908) also fits.

best regards
