Can you tell me about this old family cameo locket?

This is a square locket approx.1"x1". it may be gold or rose gold, it may even just be brass. I have no idea at this point.

The engraved character is unknown to me.
It looks to be wearing a headress of some type, possibly with feathers. The stone looks black at first apperance,but under light it is a deep (Dark) crimson red.

On the back is engraved a crane or a heron with some reeds and a sash through the corner.

The frame is ornately adorned with scrolls.
It opens up and has a piece to secure a picture.
