Metal Composition Clues
by: Anonymous

Hi Cathryn thank you for writing in with the following gold hallmark question.

"This is a six prong yellow metal solitaire setting ring with no stone. Is it gold or gold plated?"

Capital letter A followed by a Star is the maker's mark of:

Allsopp Bros (Manufacturing Jewelers, Newark, NJ, USA) - ca 1930s - 1943.

Your local jewelry will be able to acid test the metal to determine the gold content. You can usually detect if it is plated or not, especially with older pieces, as there will be tell-tale clues, like peeling or flaking, or change in metal color around the wear points.

best wishes,
Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre
