Dollar Sign Hallmark?

Hi there,

I have an old ring, stamped with 585 and what appears to be a dollar sign, or an 'S' with a line through it. I assume it is old because it appears to have old mine cut diamonds on it and a rather aged pearl. Can you tell me what the hallmark means as I have searched the internet to no avail.
