Albert Watch Chain
by: Paul

I have a 9k albert watch chain with the same
M & M makers mark but it also has the Birmingham mark but no date letter. The only way to roughly find out its age would be to identify the M&M makers can anyone help?

Scottish Makers Mark on Antique Opal Ring
by: Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre

Hi Stacy I'm presuming your antique opal ring originates from Scotland. Are there any other marks on the ring, a date mark?

Without being able to examine the ring, the "M&M" is probably the sponsor's mark, (not initials) sometimes called a makers mark.

There's a link to a data-base of historic Scottish goldsmiths that you can access from this page.

Your opal ring sounds lovely, however you have to be careful with antique opal jewelry as opals are soft gems and tend to deteriorate over time, especially if not stored carefully.

Whatever you do, never put your opal ring in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner!

Let us know how you get on Stacy with the historic Scottish goldsmith data-base?

best
