Blind Goddess
by: Yvonne

Hi Mustang Sally

thank you very much for your post and now I am thinking that if both your mother and grandmother had one of these medallions it seems to indicate they were commemorative in nature, marked a significant life event perhaps. I am suspecting that the medallions have some connection to the Italian movie (1934) "Blind Woman Of Sorrento" - I think this would be a good place to start further research. Please let us know if more information on the blind woman of Sorrento is found and post your response in the comments box provided. Thanks to all contributors! Yvonne

I also own 2 of these medallions; one is round and one diamond shape. They were respectfully from my mother and grand mother. My grandmother is from Avelino outside Naples. I would like to know the meaning of these pieces. We called them the blind godess.

Blind Woman of Sorrento
by: Kim Arnold

In researching the story behind and Italian horn with the depiction of a blind woman. I have come across Fortuna, Roman goddess of fate, fortune and luck. Wondering if your medallion is of this deity. Sometimes She is blind, as an acknowledgment that good luck does not always come to those who seem to most deserve it.

What could it possibly mean !
by: Sofia

I too was given a "Blind Woman of Sorrento" medal. Unfortunately I do not remember what my mother told me about the symbolic nature of the piece.

At the time I didn't care for it because I wasn't into jewelry, but now I wish I had paid more attention to those words. Especially since I'm questioned about it whenever I wear it. It truly is a beautiful piece of artwork.

Symbolically can it mean that justice is blind.....at least it should be !

All I know is that over the years my beloved mother kept telling me that I should have been an attorney....Mama Mia...maybe giving that medal to me when I was in college was a subtle nudge.

Let's wear the medal proudly as a symbol of our heritage

I have an 18kt italian horn with a similar woman on it blindfolded that was my great grandmother's from the early 1900's. I'm trying to find out the story behind it as my mother was from Naples and I found it amongst her jewelry. I've also looked in Italy for something similar and can find nothing like it.

Picture of The Blind Women of Sorrento Medallion Yes Please.

Hi Tina

a picture would be great if you can arrange. Visitors with an interest in medallions and myslef would be very interested to see the medallion. A photo often can jolt someone's memory and establish the history 'cause frankly Tina i haven't much of an idea and as interested to find out the history as visitors following this thread.

There is a 1934 Italian film titled 'The Blind Woman of Sorrento'
Possibly connected?

I consider myself very fortunate to own a French "Motherhood" medallion by Louis Oscar Roty who was born in 1846 in Paris and he was responsible for the resurgence of the medal as a work of art at the end of the 19th century. The craftsmanship is exceptional. The craftsman has more space to display on a meadaliion.

I also have this piece in the family very rare
by: AnonymousTina

This necklace has been in my family for years, my grandmother asked if i wanted her, i didn't realize at the time how beautiful she was, so i gave her to my sister, who in turn passed it to her daughter. What a beautiful piece, it is like puffy with a rope around the medallion! The story is that even though she is blind, she sees all, she is a symbol of Good Luck and Fortune. My grandmothers was larger than a silver dollar - just magnificent. So sorry I gave her away. My brother recently went to Italy I now have a charm on a bracelet, but he had trouble finding that. No comparison to grandma's piece!!!!!

My grandmother left me that medallion that i in turn gave to my sister. I am now sorry i gave it away, my sister passed and my neice has it. It was beautiful and very big!

The story my mother said, is that even though she was blind, she sees all, and brings good forfune. I am in the market to purchase one, if i could find her. They are very rare and 18kt gold. My grandmothers had a twisted rope around the medallion and was puffy with a front and back.

Contact me if you acquire anything like this. I doubt it. My friends even checked for me on a trip to Italy. Naples most likely which is where my grandparents were from. Sincerely good fortune tina

Photo of Medallion Please
by: Anonymous

Can you please take a photo of the medallion and post it or send it to me? I am trying to find out more about it. We had it in my family and it was lost (it is exactly the same as your description, even the rope necklace). I would like to try to find a new one and learn about the history behind it so the photo would be very helpful since i don't have one. Thank you!

I have one also, the story on how i received it is identical to yours. I was trying to find the history behind who she is. I always thought she was the greek goddess who holds the scales of justice. still not sure.
