golden "book"

I'm not sure if this piece is Indian or not. It is not really jewelry, either, but I thought someone might recognize the style, age, or origin.

The piece is book-shaped, opens and closes by hinge, and closes with a small latch.
It has one hallmark on the top edge, but I cannot make it out, nor can I get a decent photograph of it!

I'm not certain, but I think the piece is high carat gold.
