Hardstone Gems Last Longer
by: Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre

Agate is a Hardstone which is a semi-precious gem and Sardonyx when talking Cameo is generally referring to a type of conch sea- shell which has rich brownish-red colour on carving and because sea-shell is much softer than Hardstone, the latter will outlast the distance of shell; the cameo will last longer and for cameo collectors like the late Kaye Stevens, US singer and actress (1932-2011) this is important.

See the remarkable very old Carnelian semi-precious Hardstone with Profile of Zeus!

Agate Cameo

It certainly depends on who you ask, but I believe Agate is one of the most precious and sought after materials used in Cameos.
