Information about Pearls
by: Anonymous

Hi Teresa thank you for writing in with the following pearl question:

"I have a strand of pink pearls and they are quite old. They have an unusual clasp. The clasp has what appears to be six diamonds in a bow. The clasp slides into the main part of the closure."

Without a photo of the pearls to go by, it's difficult for me to give an opinion. The "diamonds" may not necessarily be the real thing. The quality of the clasp can be a clue to the quality of the pearls but not definitive. If the pearls are individually knotted this will also be clue - good quality pearls, in most cases will have a knot between each pearl to protect the pearls from each other.

You will find lots of pearl info on this site:

Info on cultured pearls can be found here.

Info on pearl imitations can be found here.

Info on how to identify cultured pearls can be found here.

Info on grading pearls can be found here.

best wishes,
