Is 200 a standard mark?
by: Anonymous

Good Morning Kyle

if the cameo is signed you are off to a great start. Not all cameos are signed.
For example, today master carver Gennaro Borriello is one of the leading cameo carvers in Torre del Greco, and is responsible for selecting the subject of each cameo produced by his artists. His team work from home at their own pace, and not as one might imagine, in a factory. Master carvers of modern and antique cameos, may sign on the front of a cameo or the back.

It is sometimes difficult to decipher the name, because it could be an Italian name and not familiar to us.

I'm interested to know how you managed to work out it's a 20th century cameo?

Is the metal frame gold or white colored? Fineness marks appear on precious metals. But the number 200 is not normally a standard mark. It doesn't seem to fit into any of the methodologies of hallmarking that I can see, and may not be a standard mark at all.

The marks begin with a punch, and are called standards. The origins of precious metal crafting were largely unregulated resulting in the creation of precious metal and alloy mix variations from country to country. The establishment of set fineness standards first began in the late 13th century in England and France. As the manufacturing of precious metals expanded so did the number of different standards of fineness.

A photo would be extremely helpful in understanding more about the cameo producer and the age.

Warm Regards
Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre
