Hi Greta Thanks for writing in with the following hallmark question:

"I have a gold band engraved with the date oct 15/1902 there is a rectangular shaped stamp with a star, the letter 's', and another star. What would that symbol be pertaining to? Is there any way to check what kind of gold it is?"

A star followed by an S followed by star was used by JOSEPH SEYMOUR MFG Co. [slight variations] (Syracuse, NY, USA) - ca 1887 - 1909. Your local jewelry will be able to acid test to determine metal composition for you. It shouldn't cost much, alternatively you can test yourself with digital gold metal testing equipment.

best regards,
Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre
