ar -Italian Makers Mark?
by: Anonymous

hi there i 've just been searching about a hallmark and the numbers after the star and so it's probably an Italian makers mark. my item was marked star 79 then ar

i found out the 79 referred to the jeweller and ar is for d'Arezzo.

Cameo Beauty
by: Anonymous

Hi Zoe

thanks for writing in with the following cameo question:

"my aunt gave me a beautiful cameo brooch, i'm not sure if it's real. all it has is the hallmark of a star.. what does this mean? Best Wishes Zoe in York"

Zoe, that's a pretty cameo and I like the surround too with all the seed peals they match the feminine beauty and classicism of a cameo. The problem is with stars - there are just so many. Stars can mean all kinds of things. If the star is alone it will not be a maker's mark. Possibly some kind of import mark. Your local jeweler can test the gold content for you. It shouldn't cost much. The cameo is quite modern - it is not an antique cameo.

best wishes,
Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre
