Chatelaine Purse ca 1890s
by: Yvonne

Good afternoon
Thanks for writing in and for uploading an image. The purse would have originally been attached by way of a short chain to a Chatelaine, which was an ornament clasp worn in the daytime at a women's waist, attached to a belt ot girdle with a hook like plate from which were suspended several, (usually five but up to nine) short chains terminating with rings or swivel catches, your purse is French hallmarked, assemblage of small objects for daily household use, could have included, mirror, perfume, knife that would have been each attached by way of a gold chain.
Chatelaines were made of gold, silver pinch beck and cut steel, they rarely had a gemstone. They were very popular in the 18th and 19th century.

Notice the art nouveau motif around the top of your purse.

On p. 251 "Collecting Victorian Jewelry" C. Jeanne Bell, 2004, there is a mesh purse almost identical.

Warm Regards
Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre
