Unsure as to origin of family heirloom

by Melanie
(Victoria, Australia)

Family brooch

Family brooch

I inherited this brooch from my grandmother, who told me that it has been handed down through the female side of my family for many years. About 5 generations ago, a female member of my family worked as a governess to a wealthy family in England. It had passed down through the female side of their family for many years (unsure how many) and as the family only had sons at that time, it was given to my ancestor as she was considered part of the family. She has then continued the tradition through my family. It came to me from my grandmother as my Dad only had brothers. I was told that traditionally it has been worn on each girl's wedding day. I think maybe it is a Victorian honeymoon brooch, but it doesn't quite seem to fit the norm with honeymoon brooches. Do you know anything about it?
