Victorian Earrings

I have a question about some Victorian lever-back earrings that I have. The wires are stamped 14k, and the levers are stamped RG, which I assume means rolled gold. My question is what metal is the rest of the earring made from? Since both the wire and lever are attached, and there no real noticeable difference in color between the 14k and the rolled gold, I can't tell whether majority of the earring is 14k or rolled gold. Was it common to put 14k wires on rolled gold earrings? Or was it common to use rolled gold levers on 14k gold earrings?
