Which Way to go to Find the R letter
by: Yvonne

Hi Genny!

okay you can start by getting more of an idea about the age of the item. That will give you some direction as to your next step which will help you to find the maker. The R letter could be the manufacturer's mark. There are so many different R letter marks. Phew....... Without seeing the letter itself it's impossible to determine. Get the gem tested. There are some fairly reliable gem testing kits available now that can tell you if it's a genuine diamond. Some diamonds are very small - they are called accent diamonds and whether they are genuine or not gives you more of an idea about the Standard of the the piece in its entirety. Also whether this item is Costume jewellery. Costume Jewellery is very collectible. The stones are not generally genuine.

Thanks for your question Genny!.

R 14k
by: Anonymous

I have a cuff kink and tie clip, with the same mark "R". However on my tie clip it also has the "r" and "Robbins"
I believe the "r" stands for Robbins.

The Letter R & Enos Richardson & Co
by: Anonymous

Aleta

I am glad we could be of some assistance. Yes, I don't see either the curly cues on the initial R in the image, on this piece, that would indicate maker - ENOS RICHARDSON & Co. (manufacturing jewelers, New York, NY, from 1896 - 1922).

You are welcome to send in a follow-up submission and upload the image of the Enos Richardson "R" mark with the curly cues. Just type "What does a stylized hallmark "R" on 14K gold represent? - Follow-Up" in Subject Heading.

Best Wishes,

Yvonne

The Enos Richardson Co. New York City Mark :)
by: aleta

hello Yvonne, thank you for your response. the mark shown here on this forum is from one of the cufflinks and doesn't show the curly cues on the first upright in the R. the other cufflink is marked with a very worn R but for the curly cues which are there. the links were made by the "Enos Richardson Co. NYC" and are probably circa 1890s-1910s. the mark was found at the same site you directed me to in your comment as shown below.
Thank you very much for your help in identifying these beautiful old cuff links.:)

The mark is shown in the 1922 Edition of "The Jeweler's Index" by the "Keystone Publishing Company on page 13.
This annual index contained marks and other reference material from the late 1800s to early 1900s.
The mark can be viewed online at http://chicagosilver.com/jmarks13.htm

Possibly US, "Rosenthal and Kaplin" Jewelry Mark
by: Anonymous

Good Morning Aleta!

I think this might be the jewelry mark of Rosenthal and Kaplin, who operated from 15 John Street, New York.

I am not sure if the same company R14K are still at the above address or of the connection with Kaplin Jewelers today. However you could try emailing the company...

KAPLIN JEWELERS are at 1196 Sixth Ave (47th St) New York, NY 10036 ? Ask for Fred Kaplan
212 366-1900 or Email fklegend2@aol.com

Apparently they have been buying jewelry for almost 70 years and have plenty of knowledge about all types of jewelry. Apparently, at Kaplan Jewelers, you'll get a free quote on any jewelry you bring in. Apparently they also have jewelry appraisers in the building, so you know they mean business.

You can cross check the mark and see if it is close to Rosenthal and Kaplin, in the Jewelry Resources. Click on the link in the Jewelry Resources that says, "US Jewelry Marks 1922" alongside Famous Collections which you will see on the left hand side Navigation bar. The US Jewelry Marks 1922 are listed alphabetically, scroll through the jewelry marks until you get to the R's.

Happy Hunting!

Yvonne
