A & W
by: Stephen Alabaster

Although the ring does not sound like a recent piece of our manufacture, A & W is the mark of our company Alabaster & Wilson Ltd which has been in business since 1887 and always manufactured jewellery of high quality. If you would like to send a photograph of the mark and the ring itself we will be pleased to try to identify if it was made by us.

Gold Signet Rings
by: Anonymous

Hi thank you for writing in with the following hallmark question:

'" I have a large gold ring with a raised engraved heart. I know it's old but would like to know how old. Inside is stamped with M and A&W, anything else has worn away."

More info is requested. If you are unable to upload a photo in a follow-up submission, could you describe the marks in more detail please.

To help us research the maker, could you tell us how old you think the ring might be? Are the letters overlapping? Are they in script? Is the M in a box or lozenge shape? Is the A&W in a separate shape? (The shape behind the letters).

The marks are the maker's marks but more info will be necessary to establish the maker.

From the 19th century signet rings were simple gold bands having an intaglio initial or monogram on the flat bezel, or having a raised ornamental initial or monogram. Many signet rings were mass produced.

best wishes,
