Baroque Pearls
by: Anonymous

Good Evening Richard

it's certainly a unique ring - what is written on the inside of the band?

The pearls are an irregular shape and are called baroque pearls and although baroques may have a pearly lustre they are not that highly valued unless unusually attractive or made into a piece of Art Nouveau Jewelry by Lalique. They were used for L'Art Nouveau (1890 - 19010) and fanciful objects of jewelry, the designer taking advantage of the resemblance of the baroque pearls to forms found in natural forms and structures.

See the Baroque pearl that fetched $185,000 at auction:

ART NOUVEAU GOLD, ENAMEL AND PEARL BROOCH, BY RENÉ LALIQUE

Some remarkable examples of barque mountings have been produced. In a single collection in the Imperial Treasury of Vienna are baroques forming the principal parts of figures of a horse, stag, lamb, tortoise, lizard, cock, dragon, butterfly, gondola, hippopotamus, female bust, and mermaids.

Best Regards
