Thanks!

Thank you for the information. It is very plain. The subject is just of a woman's profile including the neck and a little bit of far shoulder. Her hair is up. The frame contains little gems that are dark almost metallic and there is a small mark on the back....I will have to get a magnifier to read it. I will post when i have more info!

Thanks!
Karen

Mother-of-Pearl Cameo
by: Anonymous

Good Morning Karen!

isn't this what we love about antique and vintage jewelry, the way it gently reminds us of loved ones and occasions, of this or that event in days gone by, in a way that only antique jewelry & vintage Jewelry can, it is evocative jewelry and doesn't cost the earth.

Your cameo sounds lovely Karen, and from the dates you mention, would be classified as a Vintage Cameo. Subject??? What is the subject on the front of the cameo? Is there any jewelry marks on the frame or on the cameo itself? Jewelry Loupes are designed especially for examining jewelry close-up.

Cameo are carved from various materials. The "pearlish" appearance of your Cameo, sounds like it could be made from iridescent mother-of pearl. Mother-of-pearl cameo come in a range of different colors and are very collectible. If you compare the values of contemporary mother-of-pearl jewelry, you will start to get the picture.

The subject of your cameo, the artistry of the carver, the quality of the surround, the material used in the construction of the cameo, the condition of the piece , jewelry markings, that will help you date and place the Cameo should be considered.

Italy is the traditional home of Cameo making. Regarding your question concerning the maker of the cameo, Karen I haven't come across an Order of Nuns making cameo in Italy however, it is quite possible, but a hard one to hunt down. Do you know of a religious order who make/ made cameos in Italy? Help Karen out, and post a comment in the above link.
