Dyed Black Pearls

Dyeing and irradiation have been used for many years to alter pearl colour. The bright colours that result from most dyes do not resembe anything found in nature. Yet some dyes can simulate natural colours. One of the most common colouring agents is silver nitrate, which is used on cultured and freshwater pearls to chemically darken the nacre and imitate naturally coloured black pearls.
