Butterfly or Moth hallmark

by Annemarie Smith
(Nottingham, England)

Please, could you tell us what the moth or butterfly hallmark means? Is it a particular make, or jewellery house? We have found it in gold 14ct compact purses or mesh finger bags (chatelaines). We assume that they are of North American origins, as this type of gold is mainly used there.

Impossible to upload a photo, but it just looks like a tiny dragonfly/moth/butterfly mark indented next to the gold ct sign. Ideally we only want to know what it means, and whether it is a symbol for a particular shop, or period. Could you be so kind and tell us as much as you know? Thanks for your help in this matter.
