It depends a lot on the style of the earring findings. Threaded studs, for instance are circa 1890s. Although they are still used today, they are smaller in diameter and usually lighter today too.

Barbara there actually are cultured pearls, that are shaped like pillows, they look like puffy pillows!

They are very hard to find though. I believe "Pacific Pearls" at one time had some of these types of pearls.
