Information on S U Ltd
by: Helen Fowler nee Swales

I have inherited a 9ct gold sygnet ring with the Maker's Mark of S U Ltd, hallmarked Birmingham. We believe it was taken by a family member to the USA, then sent back to England. Searching for info on the maker or S U Ltd.

SU and Crown Marking but no purity mark?
by: Davo

I have a ring similar to the above. According to my dad it was my great-grandfathers, which I'm estimating would make it around turn of the century (1890's). It has a crown marking smaller than the size of a pinhead and the inscription S.U. but no purity marker. I'm wondering if anyone has any insight.

I'm reasonably certain the ring is real gold and apparently is was acquired by my great-GF to settle a gambling debt in London, so I'm reasonably certain it is from London as well. This thread was all I could find on the SU marking.

Jewelry made for overseas sale
by: Tony

I have inherited a gold signet ring from my grandfather with his initials. My jeweler advised the following:
Maker: SU
Crown: 18ct
Shield: Chester
Date: 1903

I'm in Australia and am not aware of him travelling to the UK. Were any of these made for export?

How interesting. Would you happen to have any photos of grande father's shop in Hatton Garden? Always good to preserve these details for future generations.. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely

SU ring makers mark
by: Anonymous

I have a gold diamond ring bearing the Chester Hallmark 1899 and the markers SU. I believe the mark belongs to Solomon Ullmann a diamond merchant who had a shop in Hatton Garden between the late 1800's and early 1900's. He was my great Grand Uncle.

photos P.L.E.A.S.E!

Good Morning Jonathan

three wheat sheaves with sword in the centre is the Chester Town mark
from 1782- 1964

The Lion Head is the London Town mark from 1882 - Present.

The UK gold quality mark is the CROWN followed by 18

The Lion in this sequence and ring being gold has confused me. Two TownMarks?!

Could you please attach in an email three photos:

1. A photo of the mark close up.
2. A photo of the mark and surrounding area which will include the complete hallmark sequence.
3. A photo of the entire ring.

Send to yvonnehammoudaATmacDOTcom

Best Regards
Yvonne

Wrong UK Sequence on Antique Ring
by: Yvonne

Good Morning

thanks for writing in. the UK stamp on 18ct Gold is Crown FOLLOWED by 18 (1798 - 1974) not the other way around - this could be the reason why you are having trouble with finding a maker initial S.U in Chester (or Birmingham).

These marks could be aping UK British hallmarks. You are welcome to upload an image of the marks in a follow-up submission.

Warm Wishes
Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre
