Diamond 9ct gold ring

I have this stamp on my ring I asked the assay office they said it was criton jewellers. My ring is cj ltd 9.375 n in a circle + a lion head.

Read Through Test

Here is one test for diamond you can do at home, You can't read print clearly through genuine diamonds, so depending on the setting (if it's a closed setting you won't be able to do this test) place the diamond on top of newspaper print or other type of print, and if you can read the print through the top of the stone, the stone is not a natural diamond. A genuine diamond that has been cut too shallow may be easy to read through and provide inconclusive results. The more tests you can do the more accurate.

The crown and 375 together were used between 1975 and 1998. Prior to that you would have had 9.375, but there's no "9" there.
the 1830 p is lower case and the shield shape is different.

I'm confident it's 1989, particularly with cross reference to the sponsor mark, which i've double checked.

The wear is not untypical. Although 9ct is strong, it's not indestructible. I've seen wear like that following a resizing when the jeweler has polished the inside of the ring and taken out the defenition of the hallmark.

If it were a diamond set ring it would be very very unusual to have a full hallmark on the item in the 19th century.

The sponsor mark also points to a modern piece. In older hallmarks the initials were in a shield of some shape or variety, and not a "skeleton" mark as we have on this ring, which i understand is quite a modern development.

I'd love it to be a 19th century ring, but alas it's definately a modern one.

Hi Lucy - thanks for writing in & a belated Happy 18th Birthday greeting to you from Antique Jewelry Investor! It's always great to hear from young people, preferring antique and vintage jewelry that doesn't cost the earth.

uhmm... i'm not sure Steve, the marks look rather older to me, well worn, indeed the date letter is difficult to see & the leopard has almost disappeared, if the ring is modern, then the previous owner certainly liked wearing this ring.

I'm wondering if this mark might not be the mark of CHARLES JAMISON CJ Ltd, 1830 (from what i can see, the date letter P looks similar and also similar shield) and working with 9ct gold during this period.

The Leopard Town mark is from 1822 to present.

Any info about the setting or the diamond will help here, if diamond is the original, it will be an antique diamond cut if the ring's antique.

18th birthday ring

It is a modern ring.

The initials CJLtd refer to the maker and it's called the sponsors mark. I think the company is Celeste Jewellery of London, but I don't think they are in business any more.

The crown is the traditional UK finesness symbol for gold
The 375, as you've already spotted, tells you it's 9ct gold (375 parts per thousand pure gold)

The leopard's head tells you this was hallmarked in London
The italic capital P tells you that is was hallmarked in 1989.
