Gold or Electroplated Gold ?
by: Anonymous

Hi thank you for writing in with the following hallmark question:

"I have a gold cane top that i am interested what the markings mean. Could you please tell me? It says: 14k U 24 8x? Does this mean who made it? Very curious, please let me know. Thank you."

This is an interesting question, although not jewelry we will give it a go. Regarding the 14K mark:

14K, 14ct or 585 (parts per 1000) or 58.5% gold (Asian for overseas market. Common in USA. Russian 584.)

We don't think it's a marker's mark, we are wondering if this mark might be rolled gold or electroplated 14kt gold and indicative of the gold content?

Your local jeweler can acid test the gold to determine the metal content. You are welcome to send in a photo of the mark in a follow-up submission if you like. We would love to see this fascinating object if it is possible.

best wishes,
Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre
