What a nice ring you have there. I believe you are right, the 14 (which is usually followed by k, kt, would indicate the purity of gold. The four digit number you see could likely be a patent number. It's hard to see from the pictures, but the stone looks more crystal then amethyst. Is it clear or purple?
With that type of ring you will want to weigh it to calculate it's value, as you are right, if it's an initial ring, unless someone has those initials, they are likely going to have it melted down.
