Ear Ring Findings and Pendant Loop
by: Anonymous

Hi Kim thanks for writing in with the following pearl question:

"I have and old set of stud pearl earrings and necklace, the earrings are pearl studs and a single pearl pendant with a fine gold chain. In the original box looks to be made of leather and it shows wear. I can send a picture of them if you want to see them. Any idea for the time period that the leather gift boxes were sold?"

Pearl earrings are the quintessential piece of pearl jewelry in every woman's jewelry collection. I would try to date this pearl jewelry set according to the ear ring findings and the pendant loop if the chain is the original to the pendant.

The threaded studs for pierced ears are circa 1890's and the modern ones you see today are smaller in diameter and the nut is usually a lighter weight than the older vintage pearl earring studs.

The pearls could be cultured pearls, fresh water pearls or faux pearls. The condition of older pearls are what's important. Good thing they are in the original box. This will add to their value. Is there a name in or somewhere on the box? This would also help a great deal with the date.

I found a interesting Time magazine article dated 1932, about Mikimoto Pearls that I thought you might like to read.

Enjoy your lovely pearls!
