Classic Incolay Box
by: Yvonne

Hi Angela,

Thank you for your lovely description - you do indeed have a classic Incolay box!

What your marks mean:

That marking on the bottom is exactly right for a genuine piece.

- *The C in a circle ©* = Copyright. This protects the original sculpt / design.
- *The R in a circle ®* = Registered Trademark. This protects the name "Incolay Stone".
- *The symbol in between* = That is the official Incolay logo mark. It is often a stylized "I" or the incised Incolay signature.

Together it reads: This design is copyrighted and Incolay Stone is a registered trademark.

Is it a true Incolay box?

From what you describe, yes. This is what we look for:

- "Heavy* Real Incolay Stone is _very_ heavy. It is a layered, solid stone material, not light resin. Fakes feel light and plasticky.
- *Blue with white swirls.* That marbled blue and white is the signature Incolay Stone colour. It goes right through the material, not painted on.
- *Brass hinge + velvet inside.* The classic jewelry box presentation from the 1960s-80s.
- *Perfect condition.* The material is incredibly hard-wearing.

Most genuine boxes will also have *"INCOLAY" and "USA"* incised into the bottom, sometimes with *"Austin Productions Inc."* - they were the main distributor.

*How to spot fakes:*

You are right, there are many. The fakes are usually:
- Lightweight resin
- Painted swirls, not stone layers
- No © / ® marks, or just a sticker
- Rough inside, no velvet

If yours is heavy, cold to the touch like stone, and has those incised © and ® marks, you have the real thing.

It's a beautiful piece of 1970s American decorative art - made to look like ancient carved cameo stone.

If you want to be 100% sure, you could send a clear photo of the bottom mark to the *Incolay Collectors group on Facebook* or to *Replacements Ltd* - they have a huge archive of Incolay marks and can confirm in a day.

Thank you so much for asking, and enjoy your box!

Warmly,
Yvonne
