Have the Opals lost their lustre?
by: Mady

Hi Camelot

the valuation will depend a lot on the quality and lustre of the stones. And as your ring which is a quality item is gem-set with 17 precious stones, the stones will naturally play a big role in the evaluation. Unfortunately, opals have a tendency to lose their lustre over time.

Re-polishing is the only sure way of returning the lustre back to a lustreless dead SOLID opal. Wetting an opal will temporarily make it look better, but there's no other way to restore an old stone's lustre apart from having it professionally polished. Solid opals may eventually need to be re-polished after a number of years due to tiny scratches on the surface however the opals will need to be polished by an experienced opal cutter using professional equipment.
