MAR 1883

I am considering what is being sold as a "rare victorian piece" - a ring with a 3 ct Old Cut Gemstone and several seed pearls, set in 10k gold with a "movable shank" (it is my understanding that is mid to late Victorian age when jewelry had movable parts).

Inside the band is stamped MAR 1883. This may be a stupid question, but is MAR for March, or does it stand for something else?
