S.&W. small brooch - Is it solid gold?
by: Joel

Hello,
I have a small brooch that I inherited and the only mark on it is S.&W. I've not had it tested, but I think it could be yellow gold? Do you know if this is a usual not to have gold marked?
Many thanks,
Joel

This ring I came across while metal detecting is just a gold ring no stones or anything in it it say 9 .375 and S&W on it I know it is 9 carat but I want to know how old it is it weighs almost 4 grams and it is quite large if anyone knows its value that would be much appreciated.

by: S & W 9 375

My grandmother (84) just gave me a ring that my great grandfather gave to her when she left home from Scotland. On the inside of the ring it says " S&W 9 375 (1 0) (1 8) " I'm not sure whether the last two are 10 or 18. I think it is 9KT gold but I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

REPLY: Why don't you have a look at the entire thread - it might take a few minutes but a maker has been cited for SW in this thread that doesn't necessarily mean its the S&W on your item.

I have a wide wedding band approx 6-7mm obtained around 1976-79. It has inscription on inside -
"S&W royal crown 18 (blob?) S" also with etched number 1483 and another inscription "Lucky" Can anyone give me information on when this was made or any other information associated with this ring. I am assuming it is a Slade & Wolfe manufactured ring but don't understand the other details inscribed. Thanks

No idea whether this ring is a wedding ring or gold or silver or how old it is etc. Does anybody have any idea? it was my nan's and she left it to me amongst other things when she passed away. I'd never seen it before and I'm curious to know the story behind it. If anybody has any information on this hallmark I would really appreciate it as it has proven quite difficult to get any info from anywhere. Please somebody give me an insight thanks

Slade & Wolfe & my wedding ring
by: Sammie

I had a wedding ring, although its origins are unknown, all i know, it's my husband's great great grandmothers and she had it passed down from somewhere else.

I've had a look at the hallmarks on it and it does say s&w, then the crown 750 with the letter g, now ive checked out this letter g and it dates back to 1804. if S and W didnt hallmark them until the 1940's, how come it says this style of g which dates it back to previous?

it also says 1759 inscribed on there to the right of the hallmarks, although i do feel this could be a pattern number, as the pattern is pretty unique.

SW ONLY on Ring
by: Anonymous

Vitoria just browsing interesting thread, but for what it's worth, if there are no other markings, besides the initials, it's probably not going to be a british maker - could be US - hard to say without seeing the mark - if the metal is white - it will either be white gold, silver or platinum. Platinum is a silver/grey color and comparatively heavier. Good Luck! Remy

The ring sounds beautiful! S & W will be the sponsor's mark. Natural rubies contain tiny little irregular inclusions. And the best rubies are more expensive than diamonds of the same size. Some famous rubies (known as a Balas Ruby or Ruby Spinel) are in fact not rubies at all.

Great Info
by: Anonymous

Hi Microe

thanks very much for this information. I'll see if we can get Steve from the assay office in london to confirm the dates that S & W in the UK started up.

There is an earlier S. & W. maker, that I'm aware of, however this earlier S. & W. mark, is a USA maker, and the S. & W. is followed by a star and the S & W have a decimal point after the letters. The maker is:
STURDEVANT & WHITING - ca 1886 - 1914

Warm Wishes

not sure exactly when they closed, but they first registered their mark in 1947.
If the "h" you mentioned is an itallic letter within an octagon shaped sheild then it's the date letter for 1963, which would fit in with a 1964 purchase.

Ah right, fair enough. If I have made out the mark correctly, using a Hallmark PDF, it would be from 1963. I'll try and get a photo tonight but not sure how easy it will be to make out.

Thanks again

British Hallmarks | Scrap Value
by: Anonymous

Hi Dre

if you notice the poster says "decades" which granted, isn't all that helpful. The general public are invited to participate on these forums, it's a free service - the more the merrier.

I'm currently searching my books to try to get a more accurate date for you. In the meantime, Steve, would you happen to have a definitive date for us? The exact date the company closed down?

We have an expert valuation service. You have to factor the price for a valuation into your calculations, although personally I hate to see jewelry, that's been struck with British hallmarks go to scrap, just my opinion though. Besides the price of gold, there is the vintage jewelry store of value to consider. Any chance of a photo of the marks? The date letter will be most helpful here.

best wishes,

Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre

Great thanks. How do I find out if it's worth more as an antique or scrap gold?

Also, one post says their parents got married in 1964, and another post says they were in business in the 80s and possibly a decade either side? Does this make sense?

Thanks

hallmark

the crown is the traditional fineness symbol for gold and 22 beside it will certainly indicate 22ct. The date letter does change every year, and to avoid confusion or duplication, either the font, or the shield surround changes when the alphabet style finishes (i.e. a-z, with some missed out in one style, then back to "a" again in either different font or sheild shape).

I suspect the 490 is probably the manufacturer's pattern or style number, nothing to do with the hallmark though.

S&W
by: Dre

Hi, I have just picked up a ring and my research has led me here. It's Hallmark is S&W 'Crown' 22 'Blob' and another character that I can't make out, could be 'h' or 'b' or '3' or '5' etc. Is the year character always a capital letter?
After the Hallmark is '490' engraved.
Trying to work out the carat, saw the 22 but the 490 threw me as that would put it under 12 carat :-s (I'm new to this). So I'm guessing from the post's that it is 22 carat, what's the 490? I always thought it was the % purity?
Thanks!
I'll try and get a good photo to upload if you think it'll help?

S&W
by: Steve

S&W does indeed refer to a wedding ring company called Slade & Woolfe. They are no longer in business though. The "9" refers to 9ct gold. The "375" refers to the amount of pure gold in the alloy in parts per thousand. The crown is the traditional UK fineness symbol for gold. That mark is now a voluntary mark.

The "h" is a date letter, which will identify how old the ring is. The date letter changes every year. You can go to our website: www.assayofficelondon.co.uk for all the details :)

S&W is the maker's mark for Slade and Woolf, who made wedding rings in the 1980s and probably the decades either side. I imagine the "1580" is their pattern number!

Another S&W ring query
by: Anonymous

Hi,

I am recently married and now wear my late Mum's wedding ring.
It is beautiful and so was she.
My parents were married in England in 1964 and Dad tells me that Mum's ring received a design award.
It's about 5mm wide, has an overlapping circular engraved design on the surface and the marks on the inside are as follows: (stamps) 'S&W', a royal crown, '18', a blob (!), and an 'h', after this is engraved '308'.
It sounds similar to Kristy's - do you have any ideas as to it's maker? When I Google 'S&W' all I come up with is Smith & Wesson.

Antique Heirloom Ring

Hi Kirsty thank you for writing in with the following hallmark question.

"i have been passed a ring down from my gran which has been passed down many generations and im wondering what the hallmarks mean. it says on it s&w 9 375 then something which looks like a 9 and a smaller mark i cant make out. it also has 1580 further round on the inside of the ring. any information you could provide would be great"

A ring of this great age, at least deserves a photo. Could you please attach a photo of the marks in a follow-up submission.

Could you also provide more info about the ring, style, etc. any details you think might be of help to our researchers.

Tip* Before 1854, "Gold" jewelry meant high quality gold, 18ct and better, so the ring if marked 9ct was made after 1854.
