Hi Jenny it's so hard to tell without a photo. Even things like whether or not there's a full-stop after the initials, the shape of shield behind the letters are so important when trying to determine the maker and the date. H G & S - Henry Griffith & Sons was a Birmingham maker during the first half of the 20th century.
