Anchor Marks
by: Anonymous

Hi there and thank you for writing in with the following hallmark question:

"I have a gold thimble with 2 fouled anchors. Is the thimble gold filled, plated, or ???. Thank you"

The UK - BIRMINGHAM Town mark (Anchor) - ca 1773 - Present

There are mostly 3-5 Marks, not necessarily aligned or oriented the same. Marks include maker's mark, Town mark, Standard (Purity) mark, Date Letter, and Duty mark.

USA: 1-2 marks, mostly pictorial, some resembling UK marks (pseudomarks).

Im thinking these anchors might be US marks, called - British pseudo-marks.

Your local jeweler can acid test this item for you to determine the gold content.

best wishes,
Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre
