Birmingham Assay Office & Date Letter M
by: Yvonne

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.
The M mark is the date letter and the anchor is the town mark for Birmingham. If you have an anchor and an M date letter this means the old signet ring is probably an antique piece of Jewelry assayed at the Birmingham Assayed Office in the year which depends on the font style of the M. We don’t have a photo -
So depending on this important piece of information the M date year will either be

1861
1886
1911
OR
1986

The last M date letter year is either an uppercase M or a lower case cursive M depending on the maker. This is the only M date letter assayed at the Birmingham Assay Office that will exclude your signet ring as being an antique ring at the year of writing in 2026.

Best regards,
Yvonne
