French Maker's Marks on Jewelry
by: Anonymous

Hi Robert thanks for writing in.
The date you think your French gold Bracelet was made is within the art nouveau period. I can recommend the following:

an authority on French Jewelry marks of the Art Nouveau period is Alastair Duncan, a consultant on 19th and 20th century decorative arts to Christie's, New York. He is the author of books, catalogues and articles on this and related subjects and one of the world's foremost authorities on the subject of Art Nouveau. You can purchase books by Duncan on the subject of French Jewelry designers of the Art Nouveau period from our library of best jewelry books here.

Since the Middle Ages the most beautiful gold and silver jewelry and vessels were made in France; indeed, the French have always been expert in designing and modelling all kinds of articles made from the precious metals. It's no wonder that France is called the nursery and Limoges the cradle, of the goldsmith's art.

Unfortunately for us today, almost all the works of the EARLY
artists have been melted down and destroyed.

You may find the French silversmiths compilation of maker's marks a useful resource.

best regards
Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre
