Water, Wear and Foil Backed Stones
by: Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre

Hi Ceil

Water is a problem with foil back stones. Water can seep through the tiny gaps between the mount and the stone and really mess up the foiling (the stones are foiled on the reverse) and even the water itself can easily change the color. I know from personal experience that you have to be so careful with foiled back stones. You even have to be careful wearing this type of jewelry in heavy rain as well.

I would not recommend wearing this ring as any everyday ring or risk removing the foil which would involve removing the stone from its closed setting and possibly damaging the ring in the process. I would save wearing this for special, candlelit dinners instead.

You may like to consider the gorgeous Victorian garnet ring (the garnets really do look like glowing coals in real life) in a closed setting (not foiled) for sale on the Jewel-of-the-Month page. It is quite robust for an Antique ring so you could wear this ring for everyday wear however I would still not recommend washing the dishes up while you're wearing it!

Thanks for your contribution.
Yvonne
