That's one huge stone Jennifer! I remember seeing a huge smoky topaz set into a gold ring that was a 3cm round! The color of this stone is the clincher.
I get a match for the initials AJ similar to what you describe for a UK manufacturer but because the ring is marked 14k - I doubt it's UK manufactured.
