confused by Hallmarks - W.E.G ? DATE LETTER R ?

I have a gold ring with the following inside :

W.E.G then a CROWN then number 18 then a left hand side anchor then the letter R.

I cannot find a gold smith with the stamp of W.E.G. I think from reading your site it may have been made in Birmingham but can you tell me by whom ? and in what year please.

Also it has stamped inside on the opposite side of the hallmark a number 549 and the letter Q or P ? could this mean it has been repaired or Pawned at some point ?

Any help would be much appreciated.
