Who could help identify?
by: Anonymous

Hi,

I have a old looking ring that i want to know more about. I'm from the Netherlands so pardon my grammar mistakes :)

Hallmarks:

1. CL&S (no point visible between C and L, and only letters no box or so around it)

2. Crown in a square (UK i guess?)

3. 375 (9 carat) in a square

4. Castle in a shield form (Edinburgh)

5. Letter T in a square

I find it hard to find out the year, I thought it might be 1799?

Thanks in advance!

C.L&S
by: Anonymous

What is the source that Charles Lyster and Son was Circa 1890-1930's? I've seen many rings hallmarked with C.L&S with hallmark dates from the 1960'- 1990's. Also, I know for a fact they were founded prior to 1890 because the only things that I can find about them online is from two sources:

1. which mentions that they started a new picque industry in 1872 in the book "Victorian Jewellery" by Margaret Flower

and

2. A page showing some of their specialty picque work from "International Exhibition, 1872. Second Division."

CL&S 18k men’s Band
by: Anonymous

Just was curious about this ring all It says is CL&S all combined like I wrote above then 18k. Just wondering if it was the same cl and s that’s been mentioned. I figure it is but have found no mention of CL&S with 18k men’s rings.

Antique Ring- gemstones need to be identified
by: Lynda

Hi your ring sounds like an antique ring with English hallmarks!
The stones could be genuine too. Do you have a Gem club or association in your area? They might test the stones for you, for a small fee, or a donation. Jewelers often don't know themselves if the stones are genuine.
The color combination of pink and white stones sound very pretty tigether. Maybe sapphires. Is the metal white or yellw gold. Lynda

my ring: C.L & S Cluster Ring
by: Anonymous

Hi I found this ring in my bedroom in with stuff that has sentimental value but can't remember where it came from I'm trying to find it's origins and info in the hope I get some clue as to where it is from.

Its a 9ct gold ring with the C.L & S hallmark it is a cluster in three layers the 1st n 3rd being diamonds (or maybe cubic zirconia - don't know) and the middle layer being pink stones.

1 stone in top layer 6 in middle and bottom. There are 3 other small hallmarks on it but I cant make them out. Any ideas

Trying to identify Maker
by: Serena

Hi there,

I had recently bought a ring from england for my fiance - to be his wedding band - and inside of it were the hallmarks: (C.L & S) (9) (375) (Anchor) (S). The S appears to be the one corresponding to 1992 based on the Birmingham Assay Office.

http://www.theassayoffice.co.uk/date_letters.html

I was really hoping to find out more about the maker of the ring. Unfortunately the ring was much to large for him and when it was sized the jeweler cut out a lot of gold including one hallmark - the date mark :-( Very upset about that and am trying to dig for any other information I can find! All help would be appreciated.

Regards,
-Serena

Garter motif - buckle motif
by: Yvonne

Leslyn
Not sure how your submission landed
In the "gold sponsor mark CL&S"
But i can tell you the "belt" design of the
Ring was adopted from the motif on the Royal
Order of the Garter founded by King
Edward III in 1348 and is a symbol of chivalry.

It was to celebrate the victory over the French
and the Scots and to reward royal supporters.

As sovereign Queen Victoria was the head of
The Royal Order of the Garter - and on occasion, she elected
To wear the garter on her arm.

Whatever Queen Victoria wore, her royal supporters would emulate, and consequently, you find the garter motif (often described as a buckle)
used for bracelets, rings and brooches in
the Victorian era.

Best Wishes
Yvonne

Researching British hallmarks & date letters
by: Anonymous

Oh my America - deeply darkly beautiful blue stones, it sounds gorgeous! Love to see a pic.

CL & S was a jewelers mark used by:

Charles Lyster & Son BIRMINGHAM - ca. 1890's - 1920s.

If you want to further pin down the exact year, research and compare the date letter which will mostly likely be the letter T at Researching British Hallmarks. check under Birmingham - the assay office in Britain where the mark was registered.

Best Wishes
Yvonne

Hi without the benefit of a photo most likely,

Charles Lyster & Son BIRMINGHAM - ca. 1890's - 1920s.

Just thought I would mention, that the STYLE of the date letter is also very important
thanks for writing in...
