Hi Marcy

it looks like a victorian mourning necklace. Black jet is usually glass or could be Whitby jet which is more rare. What is the metal surround made from? It looks like a lovely butter yellow colour.
I would think the compartment might be for a keepsake; a lock of hair or perhaps a photo depending on the age. Very lovely - thanks for sharing - Fiona
