Possibly Celluloid, a Type of Plastic
by: Anonymous

Hi Tam looking at this cameo, judging from the photo of the front and back of the cameo, it appears it could be made of celluloid which is a type of plastic made from pyroxylin and camphor.

It was given the name celluloid by John Wesley Hyatt in 1869 and was widely used from 1890-1917. Celluloid brooches, combs, bracelets, necklaces, cameos, looked more expensive than they really were and consequently were more affordable than their genuine ivory, tortoise shell and cameo shell sisters.

Much less expensive were the neat celluloid goods either silver mounted or adorned with a small miniature or cameo.
