Maker's Mark On The Outside

I just purchased a ring with the Maker's Mark stamped on the bottom of the ring rather than inside. The jeweler told me 1890-1900, European cut, claw setting on the 2.20 carat stone. Claw setting in platinum. Ring-yellow rose gold. I have searched the internet to find the symbols so I can know who crafted the ring. Are there certain jewelers that marked on the outside of the band at the bottom rather than on the inside?
