Silesian Wireworks or Berlin Iron Hallmark?

by Patty Pitzer
(Emmett, Idaho, USA)

I have what I was told is Silesian Wireworks or Berlin Iron. It has an overlapping double "V" hallmark, which makes it appears like a "W". How do I discover the year and/or Hallmark information? Also does anyone know how to clean and preserve this little gem? Its not silver. The metal is oxidizing, and I would so not like it to deteriorate further. Any advice would be welcomed.

Answer:
Patty, Berlin Iron jewelry is dated by the style of the jewelry. It is often associated with the 1812-1814 time period but actually was popular into the 1850s.

For instance, the more classic designs, backed with mother-of-pearl are associated with the years in which neo-classic designs were popular. Berlin iron jewelry of the 1850's lends itself to neo-classic styles.

Some pieces are signed but according to Ann Clifford, author of 'Cut-Steel and Berlin Iron Jewelry' these are the manufacturers' names, not the designers.

Not all Berlin Iron jewelry was made in Berlin. It was made in France, and Australian factories also made the jewelry.

We would love to see your Berlin Iron jewelry!
