Hi yvonne i would say the carving refers to the patterning yes but as to what it is im unsure, i would say some sort of metal as when i tap it with my finger it has a tin sort of a sound. sorry if it's brief it's just i really have no idea what i have in my hands :) Thanks jason

the case looks impressive to say the least. And if the sticker says Japan see no reason to dispute however can you tell us - Is the "cameo hand carved" referring to the decorative relief on the outside lid of the case? and carved from what? in your opinion?
