Antique Gold & Platinum Ring
by: Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre

Good Afternoon

thank you for writing in.

your antique gold and platinum ring set with sapphires and diamonds sounds beautiful. Platinum and Diamond rings were popular from 1900 to the 1930s. I am leaning towards the ring being an early 1900s engagement ring.

Strictly speaking the Victorian era of the British history of Jewelry was 1837–1901. It was the period of Queen Victoria's reign from 20 June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901.

Gold and Platinum rings like the one described were popular towards the end -from 1900 of the "Belle Eopque" or beautiful era. (1871 and ending when World War I began in 1914).

Symbolism, the inspiration to the ring maker of the 19th century almost vanished. The wedding ring was made as narrow and insignificant as possible so as not to detract from the gemstones in the engagement ring. Stones were prized for their color and value and sometimes chosen to match a dress.

Warm Wishes
