Some, not all jewelry is marked. You will find that most gold, silver, platinum, etc is clearly marked. But this is not a rule of thumb. Many companies stamp their pieces with everything from copyright years, symbols, makers marks and purity markings. Though the older the piece you find, the less likely there is to be a purity marking. So you should never assume just because it's not marked, that it is not made of gold or silver.
