Silver Japanese Perfume Flask
by: Anonymous

Ronni antique Japanese perfume flasks were made mostly in Britain in part, to fill the gap of antique japanese jewelry! You hardly ever come across antique Japanese jewelry today because traditionally personal adornments were seldom used in the past and gemstones from Japan are not common so a Japanese perfume flask is delightful but was more than likely produced in the west.

There are copies of original British made Silver Japanese perfume flasks on the market so caution is needed. Can you see any hallmarks on the piece? The marks will be very small and could be around the top near the dauber.

There are few examples of Japanese of pre-20th century Japanese jewelry except for lacquered combs worn as hair ornaments and simple forms of ear-rings.

While in neighboring China Jade was regarded as equal to, if not superior, to gemstones.

Hand painted porcelain and sterling silver Japanese perfume flasks (they were produced in Great Britain) are rare and collectible.

During the 1870s coinciding with the fall of the French Empire, Japanese craftsmen introduced metal -working techniques to the west.

identification marks, that attest to it's authenticity, the condition of the exterior of the metal, and the art of the engraver are important considerations.

Best Wishes,

Yvonne
