Beautiful Pearls in Blue Clam Shell
by: Anonymous

Hi Sandy, if the strand of pearls came in this clam shell box, this is a signal in itself that they a cultured pearls. Mikimoto perfected the cultured pearling technique in the 1930s; he didn't actually invent cultured pearls, as some people think.

In the early 1930s, Mikimoto opened a pearl accessory store in Tokyo's Ginza district and exhibited his pearls at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937, winning global fame and created an international market for cultured pearls.

Sandy, have you tried non-destructive pearl tests, like the "tooth test" to verify the pearls are cultured? If they were my pearls, I would have them restrung and individually knotted, providing they are in good condition.

Sandy it's hard to see the condition from photos. Are these pearls in good condition? Being in a box would indicate this. Pearls are soft gems, and need to be stored separately, in a separate jewelry box, like your lovely clam shell box & kept away from other types of jewelry, especially diamond jewelry as diamonds can easily scratch pearls.

If you decide to get the pearls restrung, I have a network of pearl stringers on hand down -under. Contact me if you need any further assistance.

Best Wishes,

Yvonne

Thank you for the response Yvonne.
There is no writing on any part of the clasp and the string is straight with no knots between the pearls. I'm sorry I don't have much more information.

Is there any marks on the back of pearl clasp?

Good afternoon Sandy,

even this box in the shape of the clam shell looks a paragon of beauty!

Sandy, can you see anywhere on the clasp, usually on the reverse or on the male end of the metal V part of clasp, a name or any writing at all?

These pearls look like they are a lovely graduated strand with the largest pearl at the centre front. Are the pearls knotted, individual little knots between each pearl - this is an indication of quality.

Best Wishes,

Yvonne
